MARCEL VEENENDAAL, lead singer of DI-RECT

DI-RECT´s front man Marcel Veenendaal to FRIESAN PROMS-5th Edition

Thinking out of the box, that´s Marcel Veenendaal all over, so this singer of DI-RECT was instantly enthusiastic about taking part in FRIESIAN PROMS-5th Edition.

It´s a wonderful challenge for the organisation to choose a repertoire together with the colourful and likeable Marcel, all of course musically accompanied by The Symphonic Music Connection and the FRIESIAN PROMS Choir. By the way, the title gives a little clue about what to expect…. ‘The destination’.

Musical talent shaped by jam sessions

Marcel grew up in Ede where his musical talent developed. Being an active type of person, his singing and music often caused him to travel to Nijmegen, Arnhem and Utrecht for jam sessions. An excellent learning experience. Marcel was also part of the Wageningen-based musical theatre ‘Roekeloos’ for some time. His fame grew as a result of his participation in the TV programme ‘AVRO’s Sterrenjacht’ in 2004 where he came second in the finals. Following this he could be seen in theatre- and musical productions such as ‘Jesus Christ Superstar’, ‘the Wiz’ and ‘Hair’. He also did voice-overs for cartoons and cartoon series. By way of the rock opera ‘Tommy’, translated into Dutch by Jan Rot in 2008, he came in touch with Di-rect.

In 2009 the then lead singer of Di-rect, Tim Akkerman, decided to focus on his solo career. In an elimination race in BNN´s TV programme ‘Who is Di-rect’, it was Veenendaal who was chosen as the band´s new singer on November 8th of that same year. Many successes with the band were to follow. Meanwhile, Marcel has become a permanent fixture in the Dutch pop scene.

In addition to DI-RECT, Marcel Veenendaal has various other projects, such as the music production ‘Ohm’. In 2018, together with the Gelders Orchestra and Tom Trapp, he visited a number of open air theatres with this show. But that´s not all, on two occasions Marcel has been a coach in the TV programme ‘It takes 2’. As a professional, he coached other Dutch celebrities who are not engaged in the musical business through this enterprise. With his pupils Dionne Slagter and Loes Haverkort he came out on top.
